UC Ethics and Compliance Briefing for Researchers (ECBR)
Training Requirements
Research employees of the University of California (UC) are required to complete the UC Ethics and Compliance Briefing for Researchers, or ECBR (this replaces the module “Conflict of Interest for Researchers, or COIR”).
The ECBR training must be completed every two years.
Researchers should review the content areas relevant to their research, and note that the briefing requires an attestation at the end of the course to affirm their meaningful participation.
Researchers receiving extramural funding must be current on their ECBR training in order to access their extramural funds.
Legacy Training Module
Researchers who started the previous “Conflict of Interest for Researchers” (COIR) training module must complete it before 12/31/2021. Any progress made on that course will be lost after 12/31/2021. Completing the COIR training prior to 12/31/2021 will satisfy training requirements for this cycle, and researchers will be required to complete the new ECBR training two years from the date of completion of the most recent COIR training.
Content
The required ECBR training promotes awareness of the UC Statement of Ethical Values and Standards of Ethical Conduct and conveys important information about the UC disclosure requirements that apply to all employees and the specific disclosure requirements for researchers who accept extramural research funds.
The briefing also covers the following topic areas: Export Control, NSF Current & Pending Support, NIH Other Support and Foreign Component disclosures, UC Conflict of Commitment, and the Whistleblower and Whistleblower Protection Policies.
Sponsor Requirements
The ECBR module satisfies the COI training requirement for investigators imposed by Public Health Service (PHS) agencies including the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and other entities that adopt PHS requirements.
Completion Time
The ECBR training takes approximately 30 – 60 minutes to complete.
